The Score

If you're wondering why people are so desperate for the Fugees to reunite, you'll know the answer after taking a listen to The Score, their 1996 classic. Featuring an array of expertly chosen and integrated samples, the album found Wyclef, Lauryn Hill, and Pras adding a smooth level of swagger to songs that evoked Roberta Flack ("Killing Me Softly With His Song"), the Delfonics ("Ready or Not"), and Bob Marley ("No Woman, No Cry"), and the result was commercial gold. What's more astounding -- and what really makes the album so memorable -- is that the production and rhymes are so well-crafted that the famous samples rarely divert attention from the group themselves, and the fact that they can make these songs all their own is nothing short of incredible.
