On Fire

It's rare that an album gains relevance over time, but Galaxie 500's dream-pop landmark On Fire certainly fits the bill. Creating a dazed, lo-fi sound over two decades ago, the band essentially laid the blueprint for contemporary buzz bands like Real Estate and Washed Out. Using shoegaze-influenced guitar riffs and soothing, distant vocals, the band managed to make a sound all their own during its far-too-short run in the late '80s and early '90s, with their sophomore album serving as its peak. It's perfectly relaxing music that fits both a lazy rainy day and a wistful summer evening, and it's a testament that the band's sound was so unique that they could even make songs like George Harrison's "Isn't It a Pity" and New Order's "Ceremony" into tunes that match the originals in greatness.
