AMG Review of Nocturne
Sean Westergaard
All Music GuideIf you haven't followed Victor Krummenacher's solo career and come to Nocturne expecting a Camper Van Beethoven reprise, you're in for a surprise. Krummenacher's songs are moody and introspective (and very well-written), and have a somber quality even when the band is rocking out. Pedal-steel guitar flavors many of the tunes (without sounding excessively "country"), supplied by Krummenacher's secret weapon, Bruce Kaphan, who engineered and mixed the album while playing a myriad of instruments and sharing production duties. The open, warm production gives the band room to move and dig into the tunes, without showing off or getting in the way of Krummenacher's poignant lyrics. Well done.
