Featuring a variety of top-notch, globe-trotting musicians from Antibalas, the Budos Band, and the Dap-Kings among others, the Menahan Street Band are probably the funkiest supergroup assembled in recent memory. Free of their day jobs with like-minded acts, though, the band manage to cut loose for a set of songs that are danceable and relaxed at the same time. The grooves on cuts like "Tired of Fighting" and "Birds" are slow-burning, and even more upbeat tracks like "Montego Sunset" feel relatively calm compared to the members' work elsewhere. Mostly, though, you can tell that this is a group having fun creating music, and that attitude carries over to the listener for the span of a lengthy, soulful jam session.
