All Music GuideThis is an intriguing set. Frank Carlberg is a pianist who at times uses drama and space in similar ways to Ran Blake, but with his own musical personality. Carlberg is featured in trios with bassist Ben Street and either Michael Sarin or George Schuller on drums, performing nine of his originals (including the five-part "Circus Suite"), two Thelonious Monk tunes, and Herbie Nichols' "2300 Skiddoo." The music is quite unpredictable, with Carlberg sometimes operating almost independent of the rhythm section, although the musicians are obviously quite aware of each other's existence, coming together at key moments. Well worth several listens.
