If ever there was a true physical manifestation of the collector's mentality, Unrest's Cath Carroll EP might be it; a four-song limited-edition release on the ultimate pop collector's label, complete with a title track featuring an obscure icon from another boutique label (in this case, former Miaow frontwoman and Factory Records diva Carroll), it's both masturbatory (the 33-minute instrumental "Hydro") and absolutely necessary (the B-side, "Goodbye to You," is as good as anything the band ever recorded). Handsomely packaged in a quintessentially 4AD sleeve, it's further enhanced by an extended title remix and the Bridget Cross showcase "Vibe Out!," but it's "Goodbye to You" -- the kind of shimmering, sophisticated pop tune that Unrest did better than anyone else -- that makes the disc truly worth tracking down.
