He doesn't get quite the same solo recognition as frequent collaborators Neil Young and Stephen Stills, but Graham Nash created a gem in the form of Songs for Beginners that stood out by sounding far removed from his usual folk-rock. Sprinkling in traces of his British Invasion past while finding inspiration in California pop, Songs for Beginners makes for a stunningly potent breakup album. Songs like "Better Days" and "Used to Be a King" are drenched in sadness despite Nash's buoyant arrangements. Luckily, Nash still takes time to sneak in a few protest anthems at the end, with "Chicago" and "We Can Change the World" providing a nice counterpoint to end the album on.
