MOG Editorial Review
It's hard to think of shoegaze rock without thinking of Ireland natives My Bloody Valentine, especially 1991's Loveless. The album epitomizes shoegaze's ideals, which favor instrumentals filled with melody and texture over lyrical content, letting the words settle into the background. As a result, Loveless is filled with beautiful vocals, mixed to the point where they're indiscernible, as dreamy atmospheres clash with wailing, terror-filled guitars throughout. While leadoff track "Only Shallow" grabs you from the start, "When You Sleep" is the prize here, with a peaceful melancholy found beneath the chaos. Loveless would be their second and final album, but it was forward thinking enough to remain relevant over two decades later.
