MOG Editorial Review
While he was never lauded as much as brother Brian, the Beach Boys' drummer still crafted a complete in utter gem on what turned out to be his only solo album of lush, sunny pop with a hint of melancholy to it. Tracks like "What's Wrong" and opener "River Song" share a fair amount of DNA with both the Beach Boys and the '70s AM gold of the time, but already there are signs of darkness early on, including the spooky intro for "Friday Night." Before long, the strangely moving studio tweaks of "Farewell My Friend" make it evident that WIlson had a surprisingly unique vision for pop music. As if this classic wasn't enough, the inclusion of songs from unfinished follow-up Bambu give a glimpse into the ever weirder directions WIlson seemed destine to explore before his tragic death in 1983.
