While it contains everything from grunge to power pop in the space of a single album, It's a Shame About Ray remarkably stays a cohesive album thanks to Evan Dando's knack for hooks. It was an album that felt intensely personal even as the choruses felt impossible to deny, whether Dando took on substance abuse ("My Drug Buddy") or relationship trouble ("Confetti"). Somehow, the sound always fit the mood even as they sounded distinctly like the work of a single band constantly experimenting, and the Lemonheads never had a better showcase for their versatility than this classic.
