Featuring a jaw-dropping 3,500 or so samples, Since I Left You is still ahead of its time a decade after it came out. Taking a page from the Beastie Boys' paradigm-shifting Paul's Boutique, Aussie electronic collective The Avalanches created something new and organic out of table scraps. Artists like Girl Talk, Washed Out, and the the Tough Alliance have since tried to match its retro-futurist underpinnings, but, as of yet, no one has come close. Of course, the masterful use of sampling isn't the only draw: a crash course in contemporary techno, the album runs through nearly every electronic genre and mood imaginable.
