The politically minded duo of Dead Prez turned heads with their sharp social criticisms on their debut Let’s Get Free in a way few kindred spirits ever could. M-1 and Stic.man both carefully articulate their rhymes, as they speak on the black struggle on tracks such as “They Schools” and “Police State.” Yet there’s also a heavy presence of maintaining and building upon one’s self-respect in all forms -- the vegan-friendly “Be Healthy,” and goal-setting “Discipline” are just two instances that clearly show Dead Prez, like Public Enemy, are seriously set on bringing consciousness back to hip-hop. In fact, their biggest song, named after the genre, attacks the overly commercialized rap world, which should leave many emcees-to-be questioning the intention behind their own art.
