My Baby's Gone

While the Louvin Brothers always had some of the best multi-vocal harmonies of any genre, the duo truly began to hit their stride by creating a series of heartbreaking ballads on My Baby's Gone. A relative calm before the darker storm that came with Satin Is Real later in the same year, the Louvins were one of the few acts capable of showing sincere heartbreak during country ballads, and their voices will cut right to the core when you hear songs like "When I Loved You" or even the tongue-in-cheek "While You're Cheating on Me." With just enough countrypolitan flair and a glimmer of hope on closer "My Baby Came Back," My Baby's Gone captures the Louvins at their peak without scaring off less adventurous listeners.

The Louvins' Capitol output was extremely consistent, and this 1960 LP (reissued on LP in England by Stetson) is no exception. Working under producer Ken Nelson, the traditional core of their harmonies and guitar remained intact, updated only very slightly with some fuller arrangements and mild pop touches. Most of the material is love laments, with "I Wish It Had Been a Dream" and "She Didn't Even Know I Was Gone" (mournfully heartbreaking even by country standards) being standouts.
