MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

Soft shoes and Swedish Cowbells. Herman Düne week, Day Three

Posted over 2 years ago
(A belated review of Herman Düne at the Nottingham Rescue Rooms)..I was worried about seeing the Düne again. Firstly, André has left the group. Secondly, I had heard "mixed":http://mog.com/aedjp/blog_post/48227#comment-260965 reviews about their latest material. .There was no need concerned about the lack of André. This may sound like I am dismissing his contribution to the band - far from it. When they played at the Nottingham Social at the beginning of 2006, it was in the tried and trusted Düne style. There were no set-lists. André would lead one song, and then David-Ivar would lead the next. They would swap guitar and bass and singing duties. It was impossible to get bored with the sound, and one gig was never like the last..Herman Düne without André is missing a certain something, for sure. But David-Ivar, Neman and friends can still make that distinctive sound, and there are still no set-lists. Often a shouted request is met by a slight move of the capo, and then the rest of the band just have to follow my leader..We arrived in time for the last couple of Turner Cody songs, and there was space right up at the front. David-Ivar and Neman played the first few songs, just percussion and Gibson, and then Turner joined on bass, with Lori Shonberg on esoteric percussion and Angela Carlucci (I think!) on backing vocals. There were no cute backing vocals a year previously at the Social, and it made all the difference. _I Wish That I Could See You Again_ had me grinning all over..I also needn't have worried about the more recent material, either. The aforementioned _I Wish That I Could See You Soon_, along with _When The Water Gets Cold And Freezes On The Lake_ and _123 Apple Tree_ are all Düne classics played live. I'd not heard the songs since the band last came to Nottingham, and they were like old friends, especially _123_'s refrain "you know how bad I like to be with you"..David-Ivar Herman Düne returned for a solo encore, before the band joined him for one last blast. Earlier he had responded to a heckle by saying "I am not a juke box". However, he followed a requested-for _Show Me The Roof_ with what sounded like a long rambling folk tale set to music, about a violinist-seducer called David. Truly wierd and wonderful..After the gig, I checked with David-Ivar about the lack of André. He said that André had got tired of life on the road, but the band have a two-album contract with Source etc, so this tour isn't a swansong. I also bought a copy of Giant, so Herman Düne week can continue with a review in due course.
