WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Moved

Posted over 2 years ago
Hurrah. We moved. From an 1862 terrace to a 1939 semi. From a paved yard to a grassy garden. From a cellar with no windows to a study with two. From three flights of stairs to one.The CD player didn't survive, and the barbeque lost a leg. I still need to put some curtain rails up and liberate things from boxes by constructing shelves. And, and...But two weeks in, I still find myself staring up at trees, listening to birdsong, or marvelling that I am two minutes run from a riverbank. I'll get round to the other stuff later. Right now I am still taking it all in.

  1. aedjp says _Planets_ is one of those songs... I have _Songs From Northern Britain_ on cassette, and it gets played in the car whenever it surfaces from the debris under the front passenger seats. My partner and I can both get dewy-eyed over some of the songs. _Ain't That Enough_ and _I Don't Care_ are two of the finest examples of the band's wonderful songs - catchy tunes and great lyrics. There's something about simple happy words sung in harmony that feels good for the soul. _Planets_ has always managed to express our yearning for space; for a place out of the city. Living quarters can sometimes be a bit cramped in the UK, and although our terraced house was lovely and we had some wonderful neighbours, we've been desparate (and unable) to move for the last five years. Somehow the tape would always surface when we were driving to somewhere like the Peak District. Just as the sun peeps over the horizon, or the clouds break and look, there's a rainbow over the valley... _We're moving out of the city_ _We'll pack up the case_ _And make for the road_ _Where flowing rivers will bind us_ _Where shadows will find us_ _Now we're on our own_ _I feel the planets surround me_ _They gather round me_ .

  2. ivylander says We made a similar sort of move three years ago. We still think of it as one of the smartest decisions we ever made. Our children couldn't agree more, which is the truly important thing....
