WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Everything Zen

I'm very glad to have discovered in these past couple years the beauty of taking the vocals out of music, and creating music that seems to stand outside the current paradigm of "tried-and-true-indie" or "so-avant-garde-as-to-be-unlistenable". Don't get me wrong, post-rock, or whatever you want to call it, has had it's share of criticism of backlash, but I seem to respond far more vividly to it. Part of it is what Eno once said about his "Ambient" albums, that he was interested in making music that took the artist out of the equation. There's less of that in a band like Dirty Three or Godspeed then Eno, obviously, you feel the presence of a band there, but it feels so much more altruistic, so much more TOGETHER. It feels like a group without any of the ego that shows through on so many bands with magnetic lead singers and basically anonymous backup band. This isn't to say it's all I listen to. I guess my point is just that it's the kind of music I feel most myself listening to.

  1. ooeh says Explosions in the Sky gave me that impression - "the egoless band" - it's all about the music - holy moly those guys are together! And nice humble guys, too. The weird thing about Godspeed is how much ego their _fans_ seem to have - heh. Stuffy shows, I find.

  2. Kate says Have you heard Black Moth Super Rainbow? They are vocal-less and totally amazing. I posted about their album Black Moth Super Rainbow and The Octopus Project a little while ago. I can't stop listening to that album. For some reason it takes me a lot longer to get sick of music without vocals.
