I really got into Ani DiFranco a few years ago. I made it up to the Out of Range album before the obsession stopped.
I fell away from ani the way some people fell away from Dylan after he went electric: for me, the newer records don't have that simple, tuneful authenticity of her first few albums. (I'm sure ani would hate to hear this, as will likely the army of ani fans.) I've always had issues with her insistence of using her voice to do that weird modulation thing. The first album, in particular, doesn't have her doing that, and it's the better for it, imho.
I do still from time to time try to get back in to ani's newer stuff. But no album after her debut has had the same kind of raw, real impact for me. I've tried Little Plastic Castles, Revel, Not a Pretty Girl. None of them were really doing it for me.For those of who are not aquainted with Ani but who are interested in learning more, I recommend her self-titled debut album, puddle dive, and not so soft. For other of the ani-obsessed who take exception of my dismissal of her more recent works: please do set me straight. What's her best work after Out of Range?
