More on Liner Notes - Squares trying to be hip

Posted over 5 years ago
So here's a sample of the kind of kooky liner notes they just don't make any more: the liner notes from The Who's My Generation. Can you imagine if Radiohead or TV on the Radio had liner notes that read like this, and fans actually read them?:Original Liner Notes from The Who's My Generation----------------1965 will go down in musical annals as the year of THE WHO. It was in January of that year that a Decca recording entitled "I Can't Explain" captured the musical fancy of the record-buying public and became a best-seller. The performing personality was known simply as The Who. Then followed the inevitable question: what is The Who; or, more precisely, who is The Who?Collectively, The Who is a vocal and instrumental quartet, often described as four tough, modern guys. They all hail from Shepherd's Bush, West London, which is an area where most boys would sooner join a street gang than play in a group. Although each of them has been on the musical scene for several years, the group actually was formed early in 1964.Individually, The Who consists of lead singer Roger Daltry, 20, who has a hard style of vocalizing, which he accentuates by hurling the mike around and crashing it into the drums, while spending most of his singing time dancing backward and forward on the stage, generally imitating whatever dances the audience may be doing on that particular night; bass guitarist John Entwhistle, 19, is the quiet, moody one who seldom moves, but, as he says, if someone didn't act as an anchor the whole group would just take off and fly; drummer Keith Moon, 18, who is the "baby" of the group, is probably one of the most imitated drummers in England, as he not only plays the drums but "attacks" them, and invariably winds up each performance with a bunch of broken drumsticks; and finally, there is lead guitarist Pete Townshend, 19, who, apart from having written all the group's hits, must be the world's most original guitarist and, not content with spreading both arms out and doing a "birdman" with the guitar droning away, he also smashes the guitar, neck first, into his microphone speakers to wring out every possible sound he can get. So far, since starting with The Who, he has smashed fourteen guitars. Why The Who? There is no definition of their sound, just as there is no description of their character. The name does not suggest any specific image of the group, which is their intent. Hence, why not The Who?While there are musical limits to what a four-man group can do, The Who intend to go beyond such limits, if possible. Unquestionably their sound represents a unique and unusual departure from the norm, which is indicative of why The Who have galvanized audiences to mass hysteria time after time. Ever since their first appearance at one of London's most swinging clubs, The Marquee, The Who have been making an outstanding success of the usually moribund Tuesday night. They were the first group to do so, for, up until their engagement, Tuesday night was considered the one night of the week not to visit The Marquee. Now, Tuesday night is just as hectic as all the other nights of the week, when overflowing crowds of devotees jam the club nightly to dance, or just to listen to the indefinable sound of The Who.Following an extended engagement at The Marquee, The Who embarked on a fantastically successful tour with The Beatles. This led to many TV and radio appearances, and, at present, few nights are free for The Who. As a result of their ever-growing popularity, both in the States and abroad, The Who will soon be appearing in America. There is no doubt but that they will continue providing enjoyment and excitement for audiences here just as they are now doing for audiences all over Europe. With three "top ten" hits behind them, including their No. 1 best-seller in England, "My Generation," people are wondering what The Who are going to do next. Nobody knows, least of all The Who. They don't believe in playing "anything"... they will just wait for inspirations and weird ideas, and you can count on it that whatever the next move is by The Who, it will be something to insure their keeping the title of "The World's Most Sensational Group!"We at Decca take great pleasure in presenting, for the first time, England's hottest new group, with twelve exciting performances by one of the most completely original groups of the day, THE WHO.

  4. ivylander says This sounds like it was written by the guy in "A Hard Day's Night," the guy whose office George walks into accidentally who appears to be the producer of the pop music show. "You love these shirts, you think they're really 'fab' ".....
