Boris Releases Three New Albums This Spring
-
Artist:

After a relatively quiet 2010, Boris is throwing us a left hook and redefining prolific. Last year, Boris fans only saw the marginally-received BXI (a collaboration with Ian Astbury of The Cult) and a split with Torche. This spring, Boris is set to release not one, not two, but three new full lengths, as well as a handful of other releases. The amalgamous Japanese heavy rockers are pulling a Bright Eyes by releasing two albums on the same day on Sargent House, as well as a Japanese only release a few weeks earlier on - you guessed it - Daymare.
First up is the curiously titled Heavy Rocks, not to be confused with the 2002 album of the same name, or the 7" series Japanese Heavy Rock Hits. This version contains 10 tracks of all new material. Boris used the same name because, to them, the album "seeks to redefine 'heavy' music in a culmination of the band's tireless efforts over the past two decades." They even used the same artwork, but this time toned the image purple instead of the original orange.
Next up is Attention Please, which will be the first Boris album to feature guitarist Wata on vocals for the entire album. Ten more tracks of Wata-fronted Boris madness? I think we've all been waiting for this move since her beautiful vocals took the forefront on a few tracks from Boris & Michio Kurihara's Rainbow.
The Japanese only release, simply titled New Album, has no plans of being released in the US, but I'm sure the more enterprising and/or shady among you will have no problem procuring a copy. The album includes 11 new tracks, including the currently streaming "Party Boy".
So maybe "all-new" wasn't the right term to use. There is some overlap in the songs. For example, "Party Boy" exists on Attention Please, New Album and a volume of Japanese Heavy Rock Hits, which also contains the song "8", featured on the new Heavy Rocks. Not to fear though. This is a band who released two completely different versions of the same album, Smile. Boris has said that each version of the songs will be unique from the others. And if three new full lengths wasn't enough, Boris has other goodies in store for this year. Next week sees the release of a new Boris / Merzbow LP entitled Klatter, as well as a collaboration between Atsuo and Sunn O))'s Stephen O'Malley, titled Uroborus Circuit.
