as much as i love the life and times, (who if you haven't already checked out you should check out as soon as humanly impossible) i don't think i will ever fully be okay with a world that lacks shiner. starless is such an excellent record, could have benefitted from a slightly better eq'ed drum kit, but whatever. lots of records come out with perfect eq's but very few of them match the punch that shiner lays out on this one. normally i find the math rocky/slightly emo/prog nod bands intolerable, but shiner always manages to steer clear of the endless noodling around that so many other bands have ruined perfectly good songs with. very few people buy records to hear how long someone can play odd time signatures and of those that do, they generally seem to stick with primus and lighting their farts on fire. shiner knows this and like the dude, they abide.

if you can't get your hands on this one, the egg is just as fine an effort. you'll love em.

when shiner broke up they split into 2 bands, the life and times and the great fire of 1666. i believe that the great fire of 1666 is no more, but if anyone out there has any info and more importantly some tracks, i would be ever so thankful if you could relay that info. thanks.

i like murder by death. i am not a huge fan, but i think they are one of the more brilliant and creative bands out there right now. this record however has, on certain days, simply floored me and this particular song is just simply wonderful. any indie rock band that is able to make nods at bygone musical eras without having to camp it up... :::couchdecemberwhatistscough::: are really one upping it for everyone else. now what might sound rather um, hypocritial coming from someone that is such an obviously avid dresden dolls supporter and well, you may have a point there, but that isn't what i am talking about anyway so we can talk about that another time... back to this song, which is just stunning and about 30 minutes too short. love your ears enough to give this one a spin or 50, really...

allegedly, the show the ark was supposed to play in chicago last night in chicago was canceled due to some death threats against the band. things about this story that i know to be true: a few days ago the ark played a show at the swedish consulte in washinton dc. what i have heard but seen no evidence of: the lead singer made some comments about the bush administration one involving, after hearing a plane fly overhead, a suggestion that it be flown into the white house.

i am guessing that the swedish consulate would probably not want to promote those comments, and i can't imagine any one that likes the ark being that insanely patiotic. the only people i could fathom getting that upset with the ark would be some really hardcore t rex fans that belong to a milita group. not to mention, who even knows the ark outside of sweden anyway? they aren't exactly a great target to make an example of, like say... the dixie chicks.

either a remarkable aray of laboratory like conditions for insanity culminated on top of the ark this week, or their publicist is a serious asshole. and if you have ever met a publicist, you don't really need to call mythbusters to figure this one out. my favorite part of this being is that the only people that apparently got wind of this "scandal" were either friends of the band or people that are friends with the venues involved on myspace.

oh, and if you can find a story about this anywhere i would love to get a link to it. someone sent me one from the washington post, but it mysteriously went to a 404 page.

There's the full story.

I can't say I would be happy if a band I liked said they supported the Bush administration. But when a band says they don't, they get fucking shut down sometimes. This makes me very, very angry for many, many reasons.
