Joe Buck Rides Again

Posted over 4 years ago
So a couple of years ago I went to see Aimee Mann here in Seattle, and prior to the show starting music was playing as people came in and found their seats. So I'm sitting there waiting for the show to start and a song comes on that immediately sparks a deep seated memory in me. A song I remember hearing when I was a kid that I knew was buried somewhere in my parents sparse and abused vinyl collection. A song that I loved, but what was it? All it took for these memories to come flooding back was the first few measures of an ambling harmonica and a melody that meant more to me than I ever realized. The song was the title track to the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack, written by film score composer John Barry. From that point on I would search for that specific song as this was the only cut apart from Nilsson doing Everybody's Talkin' that was worth anything on the whole album. Yet I could never find the original for download nor could I locate an actual copy short of a special order. I just figured I'd buy it when I found it. Well, I found it, I bought it and now I want to share this short track with you. A haunting and beautiful melody from the first X-rated movie to win the Academy Award for best picture, director and screenplay.
