I've been insanely busy recently with the San Francisco International Film Festival (only 2 days left... a lot of great movies "You , The Living," "My Winnepeg," and "Orz Boyz" are my favorites), but I thought I'd drop in with a poster I finished for last weekend's Rogue Wave show at The Fillmore.
I've been a big fan of the Oakland band since "Out of the Shadows" (their debut) a few years ago... Their live set has really come along, as well... Fun night...
I've got two more posters to finish up over the next week... The Whigs (Sasquatch Festival) and Cloud Cult (next week at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco)... So, I'll be listening to a lot of tunes as I scribble away...
Here's two of my all-time fave Rogue Wave songs to check out...

Here's "Every Moment" from their debut album...

...might as well give you a taste from their latest album, as well... From "Asleep at Heaven's Gate," here's "Chicago X 12"...

First I've heard this band...mmmmm...very cool poster - love the colors. What's the significance of the pencil/eraserheads??
My Trusted MOGs
thanks for the comments, scot...
The idea was something that was rattling around my head for a while about how some people choose to create and others to destroy or silence those with whom they disagree with... I was specifically thinking about the aftermath of September 11th and how there was such pressure on politicians (and musicians for that matter) to support the war... Some people spoke up, but by and large if you disagreed with the conventional wisdom you were tarred as "unpatriotic"... This poster is not really a straight line connecting that idea with the drawing, but it's lurking there... and Rogue Wave isn't really a political band, but I still think that musicians should be left to write and sing about whatever they want... ie. create as they see fit, without worrying about censoring themselves for government or record executives...
...either that or it's just a funny picture with a pencil head guy and eraser guys...

No its definitely the former, you have the eraser heads wearing suits, and the pencil head is wearing a hoodie... :) Awesome work ZenPop - for me, nothing beats fine art on a concert poster... high class.
Cheers!

"My Winnipeg" is the new Guy Madden film, eh? I love Guy Madden, looking forward to more northern sureality.

HEY... how bout that Drew getting inked Zen Pop styley !!! Un believable... I told him he had to share it with you & he's so glad he did ;)
MOG - maker of connections to peeps who really rock !!!
So................ I know you've been busy, but you are still gonna get a mix out to me one of these days right... a John Mavroudis original to hand right along side my gorgeous poster ;) (keeding I am - take you time - I can only imagine who busy you must be with all the shows & film fest etc) !!!
(my man Van is right... your ideas are way clear in this poster & a good thing too... time to speak out about it, in art & in life) !!!

ZP -> I have to go with VANNATTA on this, High class dog, your humility on the art is amusing -> I connected the dots like VAN -> destroyers and suppressors in the suits, and me and you in the hoodie -> word to that.
your talent is astounding -> great work!

I feel sick to know that something this good, lives so close, and this is the first I've heard of 'em. Damn...I gotta get out more. They are on the list.
You go to enough concerts for the both of us combined. Thanks for taking one for the team John...I appreciate it.

Van... Thanks so much... (I guess the clothes were a giveaway... not that there's anything wrong with suits... I gotta wear one every once in a while... ha.)
Contra... exactly... Guy Maddin was at the screening in all his Canadian strangeness and humor... he's fantastic... and so is "My Winnepeg"...
Sunshine... Thank you... ...and I'm going to try to hang around you fine folks a little more frequently... ...good for the soul...
Lizzie... THAT was YOU??!!! I got his e-mail and the pic of the tattoo, but I didn't know it was you who told him to send it... That's flattering... and the guy did a bang up job on the tat... I definitely owe you a mix... (as soon as I get my act together, I'll get that together!)
Tyler... Thanks! very kind of you...
Annie... I'm so glad you got introduced... I thought the word was out... but I'm glad to be of some help with this... their albums are pretty solid throughout... They have another great single called "Eyes" which you may or may not have heard... and some phone company used part of a cool song "Lake Michigan" on their ad... I know you've probably heard a bit of that... well-worth checking out...

Excellent work as always, John! and great to see you peeking in when you can (I'm right there with you in the insanely busy dept.). Rogue Wave, great band ... "Kicking the Heart Out" was one of my most-played tracks the year that album came out. Very down-to-earth, nice guys as well. I saw them at little dive here a couple years back, and now they're playing Red Rocks with Death Cab at the end of the month ... good to see them picking up steam!

words cant express how much i love this band. haha. i think all their albums are just fantastic. i saw them live not too long ago and made a post here. took some video too. awesome poster, btw, i love the bird on a wire in the 'W' :)

As per usual, your nimble fingers rivals with your ears to spread the most addictive aural crack available out there. The first 3 were free, right?
May I just ask: Will you get to see any of the bands you work for perform at said venues? I've heard Cloud Cult is worth more than a listen.
My Trusted MOGs
GMO- thanks a lot... it's good to be able to step back into Mog... I've certainly missed it... I've got to get to Red Rocks one of these days... (I'm doing a poster for Widespread Panic's show there next month...) Death Cab and RW sound like a great double bill... enjoy...
Sam- I know how you feel... They seem to create memorable tunes that stick to the inside of your brain...
Bartleby- right... first three (or 12... or 58) are free... ha!... I usually see all of the bands I do posters for... (there's a couple of exceptions, not many)... I'm definitely looking forward to Cloud Cult, who I'm VERY BIG on at the moment... best album of last year... new one is great, too...
