Weller Jams at The Fillmore

Posted over 3 years ago

...kind of a dream come true for me last night... Back story: I've always been a massive fan of The Jam.. a truly legendary band from England. I only saw them once, at Perkins Palace in Southern California during the tour for their swan song album, "The Gift"... it was a brilliant concert... I also got a chance to meet them at Tower Records in Los Angeles (had 'em sign a few albums... they were cool as could be.) I've always lamented the fact that I never had the chance to do artwork for some of the bands I loved so much (xtc, the chameleons, the chills, the jam, etc.)... well... I finally got to do something for The Jam's main singer/songwriter/guitarist, the modfather himself, Paul Weller.

Weller played The Fillmore last night and was in peak form. Pulling from his entire catalog from The Jam through The Style Council and solo work, he put together an electric show. It's been a while since I've seen The Fillmore rock like that... Rarely does an audience stay through the encores these days... the crowd thins out a bit at the back, but not this night. Weller had 'em enthralled from the beginning. Highlights included the classic "That's Entertainment," "Town Called Malice" (encore) and two more Jam cuts that I'm posting here... After the show they passed out my poster to the fans... I heard some nice compliments and at the end of the night, got Weller to sign one.

Here's two examples of Weller's genius... both loud and soft... we'll start with the bang: The Eton Rifles, which he played with passion, the crowd filling in on the chorus... Check it out...

and here's the more low-key effort, The Butterfly Collector... a shimmering song with a power all its own.

Nice song, really.  This fits in nicely to the TSOL and The adicts I've been listening to lately.

Thank you for bringing me jam for breakfast, John.

And I'm so glad you got an arty dream of yours come true!

I think that these two songs are the first two Jam songs I ever heard. First one 'cause it was massive, Butterfly Collector because of a cover Garbage did of it.

    Cheers!

lakposhti - Thanks... There's plenty more in their back catalog where that came from... May I suggest anything from "Setting Sons," "All Mod Cons" or "Sound Affects"... classics all.

Anna - My pleasure, Anna! Will there be anything else? Just the check? (I never knew Garbage did a cover of that! I'll have to hunt that down.)

Wow... that was unexpectedly cool...  Thanks Anna... I didn't mean "check"... I meant desert menu... sorry for the mix up... (we're dealing with the new staff...)

I've always loved the Fillmore poster giveaway. Yours would've been a great addition to my humble collection - nice job. (Seeing the show would've been nice, too!)
