WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Wall of Bliss

NY band Asobi Seksu (rough translation: casual or playful sex) came west to rock The Independent in San Francisco. I was lucky enough to do the poster for the show. (result posted here).

Asobi Seksu features some excellent musical work by all members of the band... they create a wall of sound with vocalist Yuki Chikudate's soaring vocals (in both English and Japanese) floating above in a perfect compliment. Frequently lumped into the "Shoegaze" category... not unfairly... (and that's what brought me to them)... they're stretching their sound a bit on the new release, Hush. Whatever they're doing, it's working just fine. I wondered how they would reproduce the sonic beauty of their albums, but not to fret... they exceeded my wildest expectations. Guitarist James Hanna expertly carves out waves of sound backed by a super-glue tight rhthym section.

Fellow NY band, Bell and Peruvian import Resplandor opened the show and it made for a great night all around. They're worthy of your attention, as well... but I'll concentrate on Asobi Seksu for now... I'm posting a cut so you get the general idea ("the idea" being: what the hell are you waiting for? Pick up their albums and start blissing out!) "Remember" is a bonus tune from their latest, "Hush". Enjoy.

I saw them very recently and I agree with you wholeheartedly. Of course, my show didn't have a beautiful poster like that one up there ;)

Wow! The poster was, as ever, a beaut. And the music was a bonus! Going by the selections here, they're wonderful - so much so that one of tomorrow's missions is procuring an album. Thanx!

Well thanks so much, Anna! It went over surprisingly well at the show... (I NEVER know how a poster will do... always nervous ... "please... let me sell just one!" Then I can kick back and enjoy the show...  (By the way... I've got a poster all lined up featuring Mr. Death, from the card series I sent you... just waiting for the right band...)

    Cheers!

Mike: We posted at the same time, so I missed your comment and went to sleep! Thanks for the comments and happy hunting. (I like "Citrus" the best so far, but that might be because I've been listening to it the longest... "Hush" is growing on me fast...

    Zen Raven: Thanks so much!

Dale: Resplandor was really good. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to see their whole set because I was so busy signing and numbering the posters when I got there... (the hazards of being late.) Not only were they good, but they were very cool people... got a chance to talk to Aracelli, the lead singer, and she was just a wonderful person. I look forward to your post!

Indiana: A big thanks to you, too (and "Go Giants!")
