THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

Catching Up, pt. 1

Posted 8 months ago

So, I'm just catching up around here... throwing out some posters I've done recently and some music I dig... excuse the big mess...

Here's one of my favorite posters I've ever done... I've been sitting on this idea for a while... I used a now-defunct newspaper from San Francisco (The San Francisco Call) from exactly 100 years ago to the day of the show for this... I spent a lot of time on it... and a lot of cash printing it up... only to be booted out of the venue, because the Fountains of Wayne tour manager didn't know of it. (even though I got permission from the drummer, Brian, to do the poster.) Such are the hazards of the independent artist. The tour manager would only allow me to sell it if the band got 80%. This was unacceptable to me, so they kicked me out.... I was so mad, I just stood outside the club for about an hour trying to calm down. I'm over it now.... and I've got these to sell if anyone's interested. (I can't blame the band, because I really don't know how much they knew about what the tour manager said.... It's probably the last thing they wanted to deal with before going on stage. I just think that guy could have handled the situation much better... Too bad, because I really dig the band. C'est la vie.

The song, "Wrecking Now", is real gem from one of the greats... Guided By Voices... ...a beautiful tune from their (wrongly) dissed album "Do The Collapse" (I think it's brilliant throughout.) Enjoy.

That's a terrible thing that happened. But your idea of using newspaper from exactly 100 years ago to the day of the show is brilliant. Art is art and art sometimes is for art and that makes it even more precious on occasions such this one.

80%?!?! Business is tough these days, but good golly. That's a great lookin' poster too! I tink this is your first-ever post that doesn't feature the music-art link, and understandably justified. Oh, and thanks for picking my neighbors to provide the soundtrack to your words!!
