..Let's try this one more time... MOG (or a ghost) deleted the last one... weird.)..I’m not sure how many people know about this… Elvis Costello’s first album DID NOT feature The Attractions… His band on “My Aim Is True” was the San Francisco pub rockers, Clover (of Huey Lewis fame). They all (minus Mr. Lewis) recorded “My Aim Is True” in 1976-77… They never played together again…. UNTIL TONIGHT !..Tonight, at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Elvis reunites with the old gang to play all of “My Aim Is True” in a special benefit concert. My friends were lucky enough to snag tickets (and I’m going! whoo hoo!)... “My Aim Is True” is a brilliant debut… (“Alison,” “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes,” “Less Than Zero,” “Watching The Detectives,” ect.) ...but my favorite albums would have to be “Get Happy,” “Trust” and “Imperial Bedroom”... I’m jazzed about tonight’s show and so I give you one of my two favorite Elvis songs… “BEYOND BELIEF ” (the other one’s “Riot Act”)..........and here’s a slice of something from “My Aim Is True”... the classic, “WATCHING THE DETECTIVES ”... with young Mr. Costello:..

This post got deleted... and reposted.... there were a couple of comments... thanks!... and I believe the question was asked about the charity... This show is to benefit the son of Austin de Lone (a well-loved figure in the Bay Area music scene)... His son suffers from a rare chromosome disorder called Prader-Willi syndrome... Elvis will be playing two shows tonight for the benefit...

"Beyond Belief" would be my pick if someone told me I could only have one Elvis Costello song, forever. It started Imperial Bedroom off with a bang. I can very clearly remember slappin' that disc on with a high school buddy and our both saying "Wow" in hushed tones before the album was 20 seconds old.

Thanks asrati... you nailed it.... The first time I heard it I wasn't even that big of a Costello fan... (I had a couple albums, but I guess I didn't really listen that well...) "BEYOND BELIEF" just creeps up on you with a superb drum and bass line... soft vocals that turn into a snarl... This song cooks and then it boils over... The lyrics, as usual, are amazing... If you haven't heard it, do yourself a favor and listen...

I love that first album, and remember being a bit disappointed when the sound of the second one was different due to the Attractions instead of Clover. I would've loved to see this. Maybe (surely) it will be released, at least in bootleg form.

It was an amazing night...
...to be standing six feet from Elvis Costello (literally) and have him belt out "My Aim Is True" in order with the original band is something I'll always remember... His between song banter was brilliant... he even said "time to flip the record over"... He recalled that Phil Lynott (of Thin Lizzy fame) even played bass once for The Attractions in the early days.... ...after they encored with "Watching The Detectives" (naturally), Elvis came back and played some songs he wrote between the years 1975-1977... sweet stuff on acoustic guitar... then the band came back and played an old Clover song (it was great!) and a couple of countryesque songs... they finished with "(What's so funny 'bout) Peace Love and Understanding".... a rousing finale.... just a great night...

I’m so jealous! That disc is one of the six sort of semi-permanently stuck in my car's CD player, so hear it often, and love it. Have since it first came out. While Elvis has had many stellar albums since, "My Aim is True" remains my favorite, defines him for me.

I've seen Elvis in person, but always from about half an auditorium away. No matter. The man's charisma makes EVERYONE feel like they are six feet away from him. The most mesmerizing performer I've ever seen.
