God - I was at this gig. They were bloody great through this period - the playing of Quadraphenia in a small cinema/theatre was total tour-de-force, in large part (as here) because Keith Moon is in such great form. There's a fanastic "pop video" to this song they did when it came out, a little silent movie of them as burglars breaking and entering. Very funny. I've only seen it once - it would be a great one for YouTube.

Memory is a funny thing and what sticks first and foremost in my mind is walking about a mile through the streets to the gig and there were cars parked just everywhere - right on corners, totally illegal, a whole carpet of cars. Other things that still stick out - Roger's funny kind of dance-walk, the mic swinging at total extreme - nailing a huge swing during Won't Get Fooled Again and getting it back just in time for an ear-splitting scream. Townshend being manic, loud, lots of windmilling and of course, dear Mr. Moon. He was in such great form in this period - truly made the band. Enwistle was also doing some really melodic shit - big in the mix and of course looking totally bored. Odds and Sods had just come out and they did a killer version of Long Live Rock. I can't remember if they had the lasers yet.

Great video and one of my favorite Who tracks. I really enjoyed the Who the most in the early years when they were releasing fantastic quirky pop singles. I love that first album as well and only own that and a collection including those singles (Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy). So this really hits the spot!

jonh: sounds like a killer time. the band, especially Keith, do look pretty in form in this video as you describe. thanks for the story!
dermahrk: yeah this is definitely some good stuff. i'm a fan of both periods of The Who, the early pop stuff as well as the concept stuff that Pete came up with later. just a great, great band.
