WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Nu-Gaze?

Every genre has its initial boom, and most of the time, at some point, a second boom. Whether the second boom is a more boisterous boom or more of a post movement squeek just depends on timing and band participation. Each wave of ska seems bigger than the last. Each new spin on metal seems less metal than the last (ie-rap-metal/mall-core). Apparently Shoegaze's time has come. I've noticed it slowly over the last 2 or so years...Its began to show up on myspace as a genre type for up and coming bands (oddly enough, they used it to describe Head Automatica... try again Tom). Then I started to hear a little more of it in a handful of bands or all genres... there are a few moments on Hopesfall's *Satellite Years*, however brief, that show some obvious elements borrowed from a childhood of listening to Catherine Wheel's *Chrome*, or more obviously early Smashing Pumpkins, who never denied shoegaze influence. Then, just as I started to get comfortable with the little nods and hints it happens. An apparent second wave, or Nu-gaze. More produced, generally less fuzzy (at least so far) and not specifically all shoegazing, but occasionally ambient, and even a little Thurston Moore at times, the new wave of gazing seems pretty hopeful. This could be what pop radio needs... think Alt-Rock part 2.

  1. Violet Grey says It's just the age of the band members coming into play. The type of sounds they are trying to use were the sounds going around when they first started listening to music on their own. Even I'm not averse to ripping some shoegaze if it fits the timbre of the song I'm working on (Window Paine, from my new record, being a solid example). It's not surprising that these influences are getting their due. It's probably just striking you because this is more than likely the first time in your life that you've been in the game long enough to see the birth and re- birth of a style or sound; kind of like being there for the first wave of the Beatles and the Stones in the 60's, and then hearing their influence echo in the 70's.

  3. Yah-Shua says Point taken Violet.. this is the first time that I've been in this spot with a genre so dear to my heart. It happened when I was younger, with punk, but I knew even then, that the generation of punk I listened to had done the same thing to some poor schmuck in his late 20's, early 30's and left him to re-think the way he looked at his musical taste. The difference here is that this is the first time I've held something dear and seen the first major spin on it... its interesting
