Shifting Gears..

Artist:
Its the thing all artists strive for. To grow, to progress, to not sound like they're re-recording the same album over and over (Ie-Sonic Youth and a handful of albums that sounded like *Goo* b-sides) To evolve and mature is a respectable move, and somewhat essential if your band is going to last. Lots of bands are sorta known for it, Radiohead continues to morph a bit more with each release. Even Mtv darlings AFI started a decade ago as a skate-punk band with songs about mohawked 10 year olds listening to the misfits, or being a high school football hero, which would likely be a surpise to the new fans. Maturing is important. Not all the fans will appreciate the shift, you'll lose a few along the way, but hopefully not too much. But, what if the shift is just bad? Or just such a drastic change that it alienates listeners (ie-bad religion's little known second album, a forray in new wave, i cant remember the title, if your curious lemme know, I'll figure it out) Sometimes too much change too fast is, well, just that. Too much too soon. For me this seems to happen all too often, usually just after the second or 3rd album. A few examples being Muse (who got boring) Starflyer 59 (who simply quit shoegazing) Dandy Warhols (Who simply became image coupled with ego) and Belle and Sebastian, who, well, I dunno how to really explain it, they just sort of suck now. Well, its your turn moggers, what beloved bands have turned on you?
