I thought about penning some huge tome about the history of Krautrock and Faust's rightful place in the universal scheme of things, but figured fuck it, you're either interested in 5 CDs of German experimental madness or you're not. Besides, it's just hard to imagine Faust making that many new fans in this day and age anyway. The Wumme Years 1970-73, boxes the band's first three releases (essential for those relentlessly curious types), a compilation of early material and a fantastic BBC disc collecting previously unreleased live recordings and a few rarities. Faust quietly emerged in 1970 (on a major label, no less) and their off key, broken English vocals and sonic manipulation was obviously influenced by the likes of The Mothers of Invention, as well as Stockhausen, the psychedelic movement in general and fractured minimalism in particular. Beyond that, they forged new ground along with fellow Fourth Reich pioneers like Can, Amon Duul, Popul Vuh and others, all with their own spin on the collision of influences they each adroitly juggled. The result was the birth of an underground movement and, while everybody's got their own faves (for a host of differing reasons), mine was Faust. Also recommended is Faust IV, Outside The Dream Syndicate (by Tony Conrad & Faust) and Patchwork. Fanatics can still find the Faust V promo cassette and Faust IV outtakes CD over at The Heat Warps. Listen below to the alternate studio recording of "So Far" from BBC Sessions +. Track lists in Comments.
