WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The Decemberists

Posted over 2 years ago
Today I took a couple of Starbucks exclusive tracks off of my mom's computer(Hurdles Even Here and The Perfect Crime #2/ The Day I Knew You'd Not Come Home) and I'm back on my Decemberists hook. Their latest album "The Crane Wife" got me hooked last year(it was my favorite album of the year) and I then bought Picaresque(also an amazing album) and subsequently fell in love with the band. They are so versatile going from standard indie acoustic songs to full blown almost orchestral arrangements. They take percussion beyond drum kits, strings beyond guitars and bass', and also venture into horns and organs. All of their songs enthrall you for every second, whether the song is merely 3 minutes or over 10 minutes you are truly engrossed in their music for every second. The icing on the cake is the songwriting. Colin Meloy, the front man for the band, went to college for creative writing and it really shows in their songs. They are one of the best storytelling bands I have ever heard, making you feel like you are out to avenge your mothers death, or rob a bank, or any other story they can think up. Unfortunately I can not upload any music because when I transferred to my Mac the other day all my music converted to m4a or m4p as opposed to mp3 =( so you will have to go to their website "here":Decemberists[Decemberists]http://www.decemberists.com

  1. dermahrk says Yup. Believe it or not, The Crane Wife just showed up in my mailbox a couple of weeks ago. I guess one of the British music mags I recently subscribed to must have had a "get a free CD" promo that I didn't know about. As a result, I've been going through the CD and do like a lot of the tracks. A very unusual band. My biggest gripe so far is when they string together two or three songs (i.e. "The Island" or "Crane Wife 2&3") together as one track. Then I have to re-edit and separate the tracks if I really like one, not so much another. Oh well. More editing fun...

  2. WildBoer says I think they link them to show they are part of the same story, and also because they are of the impression that albums are meant to be listened to as a whole as opposed to songs mixed into a playlist so they aren't overly concerned with that type of thing. I personally like that they are linked if I have a solid 10 minute block of free time, but I don't like them if I only have a few minutes free.
