WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Let's remix the 1980s!

Posted over 2 years ago
I'm working on this long term project of portraits of musical people. People, who tend to be in the underground, playing music because they HAVE to. As one of my subjects put it "...because they have no choice." Today I was photographing Robert the drummer for the Hellacopters, we were looking for a place to use for a quick shoot so he said "hey let's go over to Stevie's guitar shop." We got there and Stevie Klasson is standing outside, closed for the day because there was a fire in the bathroom. So he takes us downstairs into the cellar of this place. As I'm doing what I need to do we're all talking about music, of course! After all Robert plays with the Hellacopters and Stevie plays with bands like the Diamond Dogs (and he's been lucky enough to have played with Johnny Thunders!). Somehow we got on the subject of bands from the 1980s, like Lords Of The New Church and Robert says "that second LP, there's nothing wrong the songs but the production killed it." Stevie says "someone should remix that album. Maybe we should just remix the whole 80s?"So we all started to joke about how the coked-up engineers and producers pretty much ruined a lot of bands. And we started thinking: yeah, someone should remix those 80s bands that were great punk bands and underground bands. Rock and roll bands that should have sounded better. Rougher. Rawer. More real. Anybody else with us on this???New wave pretty much sucked though, so we don't need to both with that.

  2. darmuzz says Funny, wikipedia claims that The Lords of the New Church were "arguably better-produced" than other punk bands! Guess it's all relative...

  3. Origami says Good idea. I wish Mary's Danish hadn't sounded so clean and non-threatening, for a band with such a powerful sound.

  4. RobP says What is this thing you speak of called "the 80s?" Was that what happened between Metal Box and Atomizer?

  5. Wade says I can only think of bands that sounded great (minutemen) or bands that no amount of re producing/re-recording or remixing could help (thompson twins). Lords of the New Church is a good one though. Will have to think about this some more

  6. White and Nerdy says Lady C, are you actively remixing albums from the 1980s? We were thinking about stealing the master tapes of those bands. darmuzz: I may be wrong, but punk bands aren't supposed to be well produced. Wade: You're right no amount of re-production is gonna help some of those artists. We were talking about punk bands that progressed into the 80s. Those new wave and pop bands are beyond help.
