Tom Waits thru The Wire

Posted over 5 years ago
I was thinking the past few days about how TV has introduced me to music. I wrote before how The Kids In The Hall got me hooked on surf music. Nowadays I'm a BIG fan of the police show The Wire. I'd heard Tom Waits before watching this show and it never really hit me but when I heard "Way Down In The Hole" as the theme song for this show, his music started to click a little more for me. I think it was the context of the show that helped. I've been noticing that the Wire has got some good taste in using music in the show. First season I recognized James Browns' song "I'll Go Crazy" then in the second season there was "Loose My Soul" by the Flaming Sideburns and "Search and Destroy" by Iggy & The Stooges. I've been a fan of all those artists previous to the Wire airing. During the 4th season I got hip to another artist I've been curious about: Curtis Mayfield. They use the song Move On Up, I love this song now.So now I wonder 2 things: Is this marketing (which I don't believe, because most of these songs are old and are not trying to find an audience) or does the production team just have good taste? Secondly, anybody else out there getting turned onto music in somewhat unlikely fashions?

  1. LadyC says the quality/budget for US tv programming is so impressive now.. i remember being really impressed with Six Feet Under and believe that in that case (or even The Wire too) they genuinely had good taste in music so it does happen. as for unlikely, commercials and i don't even watch much television. i wouldn't have picked up on jose gonzales otherwise. funny that.

  2. White and Nerdy says I seem to recall 6 Feet Under having a good soundtrack as well. I think it helps that HBO doesn't have commercials like regular USA TV does, so they can do what they want with programming as long as it seems to be making money for them.
