2007 Music wrap up

Posted about 4 years ago
I wish I had found MORE great music during 2007. It maybe that I'll connect with stuff from this past year a year from now, who knows. At any rate, here in no particular order are the albums I acquired during 2007 that are most worthy of note.I'm lying a little bit, as the Flaming Sideburns (of Helsinki, Finland) are first on my list. If you all have been following me long you know how much I dig this band.Their album Keys To the Highway was released earlier this year in Europe. No official US release as of yet, sadly. Luckily I scored a copy in Finland (thanks Mela!). These guys have been playing rock'n'roll for a lot of years. I honestly don't know what else to call it other than rock'n'roll. Why these aren't as big as the Rolling Stones, I'll never know. A lot of great songs on this album: Rock'n'roll Bang!, Lost Generation, Roky Mountain Sidegates. I'm tagging this with the song Challengin' which happens to be one of my favorites off the record.I'm trying to upload it so y'all can have a listen but MOG hates me today it seems.

  1. White and Nerdy says Album #2 would be 'A Cool Sound Outta Hell' by The Forbidden Dimension. I've been waiting almost 10 years for a new record by this band and it was totally worth the wait! Heck, the band basically broke up 9 or so years ago. I thought there would never be another release from them. For those who don't know anything about the FD - it started as a one man band in 1988 and grew into a full band and they produce one of my first loves, musically speaking: horror rock! Mixing Screaming Lord Sutch, The Cramps, Link Wray and Blue Oyster Cult into their own Canadian garage-punk. It's a rather acquired taste however, so it's a special kinda person that really gets into this band. I present to you, the song A Wolf's Gotta Learn ~duszLbBJUM1.mp3~

  2. White and Nerdy says Dinosaur Jr. 'Beyond' I got this on LP, it's good to have vinyl again. I was pretty excited about this LP as it was the original line up coming back together. The production is a bit more refined on this one and I prefer the rougher production of previous Dino Jr albums, but I can't really complain. As a bonus with this LP there was the download coupon that comes with it. It was kind of jinky that they make you go through emusic or whatever it is, but whatever.

  3. White and Nerdy says The Coffinshakers 'S/T' Another great piece of vinyl. They bill themselves as Vampire-horror-country and that's a pretty good description. Johnny Cash singing about graveyards and vampires, that kind of sums it up. The thing is they do it really well, this sort of thing could end up being ultra-cheesy but these guys put enough of themselves into the music that it's more than just a gimmick. 4. White and Nerdy says The Trassels 'Mindbreak Hotel' Another cool band from Finland. One thing that is great about Finnish bands that aren't aiming to be mainstream is that they just do their own weird Finnish thing and I guess they figure the right people will pick up on it. Things like naming their album Mindbreak Hotel and writing songs like The Land Of Mud and Slush, Between You and Damnation, Gumbahs Of The City. This is the second album buy these guys and between the first one and this one guitar player left, so now they are a 4 piece band. This album doesn't have the heavy power of their previous recordings. If it wasn't for the European Union and their silly rules I would move to Finland just for the music scene! The booze and the ladies up there are pretty good too. The Land of Mud and Slush ~le8JQzcREdE.mp3~

  5. White and Nerdy says The Chuck Norris Experiment 'The Return of Rock'n'Roll' These guys have been around for some years and this is their 3rd actual album, although there have been some varied releases of the first 2 albums. They are keeping their stoner-rock roots on this one but it sounds more like hard rock, in a good way. I tend to think of stoner rock as too slow and these guys are certainly not that slow and they don't put me sleep like boring stoner rock bands do.I was even surprised by the 1 acoustic track on this album, I was a little afraid that it would offset things but it works well on the album.

  7. RobP says Checking these out, how's it goin? I thought I was listening to these last night but my headphones were messed up and I didn't know it, just thought you were into stuff with muffled vocals. That Forbidden Dimension track sounds really familiar, like stuff I was listening to twenty years ago. Do you know The Prisoners? Britrock, heavy sixties influence, anything that reminds me of them is alright by me.

  8. White and Nerdy says Rob, good to hear from you again. You've been gone a bit. I'd be willing to bet that the main man in Forbidden Dimension was probably listening to some of the same stuff you were 20 years back. Great minds think alike. I've heard of the Prisoners but not found anything by them. I think they have a track on Children Of Nuggets, I'll have to go back and check.

  9. benjimon says Flaming Sideburns. Great band. I swear that the Scandinavian music scene has got to be one of the best in the world. I was looking through my music collection and I think half of it is from Finland (Hanoi Rocks, Flaming Sideburns) Sweden ( Nomads, Hellacopters, Hardcore Superstar, The Hives, Mando Diao and Backyard Babies) Norway (Turbonegro and Glucifer) and Denmark (The Raveonettes) Maybe I should move....

  10. White and Nerdy says A good friend of mine once said "everyone who loves rock and roll should just move to Finland." I think that was 2003, but he's right. I think just because no one would bother us up there. We could Rock freely and in good company.
