WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

She is a Modern Bard

Posted over 2 years ago
Following the trail of the Celts from herstory in Canada, Loreena found that the Celts were a wide reaching and multi-tribed bunch extending across Europe and into Asia Minor from about 500 BC onward. From her travels to Italy, Greece, China, Mongolia, Siberia, Turkey, Spain, etc, she found there is a great swath of time and geography from which to draw and learn. Like the travels through time and her travels to these places, Loreena's musical journey has brought the ancient Celt history to life in the songs of a modern bard.I have had the honor and privilege of following her career over the last 18 years, since she began as a solo celtic harpist up until the beautiful and rich ensemble performance I witnessed this past Saturday at the Paramount Theater in Oakland. This was the 5th time seeing here, as wonderful as the first. In an evening, we were transported from the British Isles to the Nomadic Caravans of the East- all through Loreena's vision and inspiration of how music and cultures have been touched by the Celts reach. Her starting point is the belief that, in one way or another, we are all an extension of each other’s history. Wanting to learn about our neighbours is also a desire to learn about ourselves. She has simply chosen the Celtic vehicle in which to do this. If you are a student or curious about the rich culture of the Celts and their influence, I highly recommend listening to Loreena Mckennitt.Presented for your viewing and listening pleasure is a fave of my wife- "The Lady of Shallot"

  1. mutterimieli says I love the Lady of Shallot and The Mummer's Dance. One of my bosses got me into her in the mid-90's and sparked my love of Celtic music. I just finished listening to Celtic Woman: A New Journey!

  2. mktackabery says great write-up Wanbli, thanks. I have recently purchased this album. I must say it hasn't quite gotten all the way under my skin, but several of the tracks have become quick favorites; so far the Gates of Istanbul is the one I get stuck on. What is most impressive about McKennit is the care she takes constructing each of her pieces. She does so much historical research and uses the best musicians and the finest instruments, and each track is exquisitely crafted.

  4. Mike the Knife says Hey! I love Loreena! (Sounds like a sitcom, doesn't it?). For that matter, my 15 year-old niece loves Loreena, and my ex loves Loreena. Everybody loves Loreena! (Sounds like another sitcom, doesn't it?)
