In "E Ala E," IZ sang about native Hawaiian issues, but there are/were one set of athletes who could make him look puny by comparison. At the time this song was released, there were Hawai'i Sumotori in Japan. (These heavyweights are mentioned by name in the song.) The Sumo association, concerned that there were too many foreigners in what is an indigenous/sacred national sport, cut the number of foreigners per Sumo stable. So, while Sumo may become an Olympic sport, Hawai'i is no longer a player in it. Oh well, ex-high school football stars can go on to other things, like real estate and used car sales, right?
