WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Epic railroad song

Posted about 1 year ago
For the longest time, I kept hearing about this song, but I kept forgetting to look for it when I came across Gordon Lightfoot LPs. Finally, I found it in a collection and played it instead of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" or "Early Morning Rain." It richly deserves it's reputation as an epic song, as it shifts gears like a train climbing varying terrain. Here is the "Canadian Railroad Trilogy."

  1. 2Serenity says Gordon Lightfoot is a musical legend! I am not to sure if many people understand his genius as a lyricist. Is he considered more of a folk singer or country singer? Is there a difference. I knew there was a copyright situation with his song, "If You Could Read My Mind" where a couple of his verses were used by Michael Masser who wrote, "The Greatest Love of All." Now, I know a few people have recorded, "The Greatest Love of All" such as Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston. But, I am not to sure if people know that he wrote the verses that brought worldwide attention to the song. This is the problem with the music industry. Verses and musical riffs are taken from other artists from the past. And no one knows unless it is brought to the attention of the industry. From his website: In April of 1987, Lightfoot filed a lawsuit against Michael Masser, alleging that Masser's song "The Greatest Love of All" (recorded by Whitney Houston) stole twenty-four bars from Lightfoot's 1969 hit "If You Could Read My Mind." According to Maclean's, Lightfoot commented, "It really rubbed me the wrong way. I don't want the present-day generation to think that I stole my song from him." Unlikely, though Lightfoot himself has always remained cautious and questioning about the industry. Said Toronto promoter Bernie Fiedler, "I don't think Gordon realizes that he has a tremendous talent. When intelligentsia of the music business courted him, he felt threatened. He's a cautious man who won't take chances." Source: http://www.corfid.com/gl/biography.htm Janet Jackson even sampled musically The Supremes in her song, "If" right at the beginning. I did not even realize this until one day I was listening to my Supremes Collection and heard it myself. I was quite mad! By the way, I was in Canada for the first time last year in Vancouver. It is beautiful there and now I see why Gordon Lightfoot wrote those songs. In fact, the reason why there is a huge Asian population in Canada was that Asians migrated to Asia to build the train system there. This is what I was told while I was taking a tour up there. Great post!
