Nervous Breakdown (Whiskeytown cover)

Must be the only recorded version of a Gregg Ginn song with fiddles. This Black Flag cover was a good choice by Ryan et al. on this excellent early Whiskeytown disc. Happy Monday everyone.

check out the energy on this early Husker Du cover of the Byrds song. Bob Mould adds a shredding guitar and visceral emotion

Oops! I did it again (Richard Thompson cover)

Britney's had a rough go of it lately. But it takes Richard Thompson to bring out the soul and emotion in this song. I heard him play this in the studio on NPR's fresh air prgram with Teri Gross, it was hilarious and amazing.

Where's the love for John Vanderslice?

This dude is way under appreciated. Sounds like a really nice show he just put on down the road at Duke.

http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A161000
Fans wiped sweat from brows and Vanderslice's shirt was soaked just two songs into his set, but the heat didn't disturb his charm at all. Jovial as ever, Vanderslice led fans (including his mother, plus Dan Bryk, David Karsten Daniels and The Rosebuds) through a career-spanning set, building energy as the audience chanted along to the lyrics of "Sara Shu" mid-show. The evening climaxed in a sing-along with Vanderslice strumming his acoustic in the crowd's center. Closer "Dream Alive" was sincere and soulful, but the audience left sweaty and with stars in their eyes. —Kathy Justice

Sonic Youth partners with Starbucks

Thurston can make all the excuses he wants. This is lame, lame, lame. Hipster celebrities like Dave Eggers will be chosing their "favorite" Sonic Youth song for the compilation. What's next, duets with Paul McCartney?

It would be pretty cool if they could get Starbuck's to play confusion is sex though. That album is positively disturbing (and great). It might make people might spit out their non-fat soy mochas.

Bands named after Belle and Sebastian Songs

Well there are apparently least two: Dylan in the Movies, and Stars of Track and Field. And as a rule I generally don't give bands with names taken from songs of other bands much of a chance. But, I caught the Stars of Track and Field on the KCRW morning becomes eclectic podcast, and saw them on a DirectTV concert series and was intrigued. Now just picked up the $5.99 album on iTunes and am really enjoying it.

Sky Blue Sky

I was really prepared not to like this latest release from Wilco. But after finally picking it up and numerous hard listens while stuck for hours on I-95 over the week of the 4th, I gotta say: this is a very decent and challenging album. Maybe not their best, but quite good and more importantly, different and interesting. Kudos to Tweedy et al. for confounding critics and fans alike once again.

Memories Can't Wait

For those of you who remember the Talking Heads as just the goofy David Byrne in too big suits, here is something from their pre-Stop Making Sense Days days which may make you reconsider them and their relevance. This is from their 1979 great album, Fear of Music. With heavy, trippy and drug induced songs, Fear of Music is in my opinion, their best and most under-rated album

The Church were way ahead of their time, although they have lost me at times along the way with their prog rock explorations this is classic power pop that still sounds great.

There ain't shit on TV tonight (RIP D Boon)

Thanks to Michael Goldberg for noting here the day of D Boon's passing. The Minutemen were one of my first obsessions, and early on distanced themselves from the rest of the LA punk scene by pushing the envelope lyrically and especially musically. Double Nickles on the Dime is an essential album. I have no doubt that if D Boon were alive today he would still be making vital and challenging music. Choosing a song is hard, but I like this one, it has a spoken word quality to it. I think the lyrics are very cool:

"How can I? Make an outline of myself?"

"How do others see me? I'm worried"

"The media ...robs and betrays us..no more lies"

"We are responsible"
