WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Hail to the Busdriver

Posted over 2 years ago
My first musical obsession of 2007 has been confirmed. One of my resolutions for the year is to actually listen to the mp3s that are offered by the music websites that I frequent and this week I finally started to make good on it. While cruising Pitchfork I encountered an article on Busdriver, an "alternative" hip-hop artist out of Los Angeles (yes, them again) whose sixth record _RoadkillOvercoat_ will drop this Tuesday. I checked the accompanying mp3 of "Less Yes's, More No's"...and it's been love ever since. (The man name checks Noam Chomsky, for heaven's sake- how could I resist?) It is such a gift to hear something that manages to be fresh without being completely ridiculous and over the top (can ya hear me, Of Montreal?), and it's doubly so when it comes to hip-hop which being written off more and more these days. The entire record is available for preview on "Myspace":http://www.myspace.com/busdriver, but here are some mp3s for your downloading pleasure."Less Yes's, More No's":http://downloads.pitchforkmedia.com/~files/busdriver-lessyesmoreno.mp3"Kill Your Employer":http://www.spectremusic.com/_music/busdriver/killyouremployer.mp3"Sun Shower":http://marathonpacks.com/Files/Sun%20Shower.mp3"The Troglodyte Wins":http://www.irockcleveland.com/tunes/TheTrogladyteWins.mp3Despite his established catalog, Busdriver (nee Regan Farquhar) has yet to garner significant attention outside of underground circles, despite having such formidable musical allies as fellow underground artists Daedelus and Daddy Kev. Is massive stardom going to come his way once this new record is out?...I'm going to safely say "no"; sadly, the music is too good to merit mass consumption. 4. tybees says Hey! I just read something about this guy while trolling for Andrew Bird mp3's, and he's definitely got an "alternative" hip hop sound. Not really my bag honestly, but I'm glad you found something to obsess over :)

  5. chucky says I'm listening to Less Ye's, More No's right now. This is very different, I think I like it. I think I do. This is going to take a few listens to process. :)

  6. Viva La Britt says Thanks for taking some time out to sample this, guys. Rawk, hit me back and let me know what you thought, man. AJ, thanks girl- I actually do feel fortunate to have found something I like so early in the year! Cam, shit, I keep forgetting about Saul Williams! I've heard Trent Reznor praise the guy, but if he gets your seal of approval, well, that's when I'll hop to investigating him :) "_he’s definitely got an “alternative” hip hop sound. Not really my bag_"...Oh Tyler, you have the gentlest way of telling me something I like sucks ;) "_I think I like it_"- ha! Yes, it can be like that sometimes, right Ashley? Here's to you crossing over to the affirmative side very soon :)

  9. Viva La Britt says lisbetho> I'm a little disappointed because he's stopping here next month, but just not with Deerhoof- what a killer bill that would have been. And what's this "go to Coachella Friday and Sunday" mess? Just cave and go the distance ;) chulsmith> The Epitaph connection never dawned on me- damn, here's to branching out, eh? Word on the street is that _RoadKillOvercoat_ isn't as strong as the two records that preceeded it, but I'm still rooting for it- this guy deserves all the light he can possibly get!
