MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

My new religion

Posted over 3 years ago
It's official, kids; I now worship at the altar of Mike Patton.About a year ago my sisterfriend VJ became obsessed with Tomahawk, and it was then that I began to hear Patton's praises sung. I sampled one of the band's tunes and, though I found the song listenable, I steered clear; I like hard stuff, but there was just not enough melody in it for me.Last winter, said friend and I were in a CD store together and she picked up the Fantomas' _Suspended Animation_; based on the cover art alone, I knew there was going to be a problem. Upon our departure we played the damn thing, and my suspicions were confirmed- there were screams and ringing alarms and what sounded like saws. My friend is going bananas over what she's hearing, but I just couldn't wrap my mind around it. I had a reaction similar to the one I usually have to Tool, like maybe if I had 30 more IQ points I could really appreciate what was going on.At last, I heard Patton speak my language. Last weekend, I randomly decided to preview some Peeping Tom tracks and it's been bliss ever since. He states this record is his version of pop music, so I guess this was my best shot of ever being sucked into the Ipecac vortex. (And it worked. Yes it did.)Nine of the album's eleven tracks are still available for preview only (no downloads) at www.myspace.com/peepingtomispatton; get 'em while they're hot.I know some of my trusted MOGS did not dig this record at all. Let's have a chat, shall we?...

  2. Viva La Britt says Back at you, A-A. I read the Peeping Tom post you wrote not even a week ago, and we’re so on the same page. Have you ever seen the band’s Conan performance? Oh. My. Damn.

  3. Dale says Soory, I tried it, I listened, but it doesn't swing for me. Guess that makes my IQ 30 pts lower than yours.

  5. QueenofHell says Yeah - I'm listening to it now so that I can think about it some more. It might be an acquired taste but his voice annoys me in the chorus of 5 seconds. I'll listen to some more and get back to you.

  6. Viva La Britt says Hush, whosyrdad. Trust me, I'm so relieved the man made something I could understand. Dude, what about "Sucker"? Nothing?! QoH...I could see that; I think that song may be most reminiscent of stuff I've heard from him the past. Amy- for you:

  7. Dale says OK, "Sucker" is pretty good. I listened to "Mojo" and "Don't Even Trip" first time. I still probably won't go get it, but I wouldn't change the station if it came on.

  11. Panama Todd says I checked it out but was not crazy about it. I did like "Mojo" and will probably download it off itunes when I get home, but the rest of it did not do it for me. I am (was?) a Mike Patton fan, loved Faith No More, thought the 1st Mr. Bungle record was great, but everything since the last Faith No More record in 1997 has been unlistenable to me. Even the 1st Mr. Bungle record sounds a little bit like satanic clown music and is just at the boundary of what I find enjoyable. I'll give it a few more listens online, maybe since I am at work I was not able to give it my full attention. Kinda reminds me of what Gnarls Barkley's evil twin brother would be like.

  12. Viva La Britt says I think the longtime Patton fans have been most disapponted with the Peeping Tom record. So no Fantomas or Tomahawk for you, eh?..._interesting..._
