I must disagree, Mr. Wilson
I must disagree, Mr. Wilson... Fall Out Boy still sucksSo I'm looking at the Wiki article on Durutti Column and they mention F4 records. F4 was another attempt by Tony Wilson to revive Factory Records to some degree. That led me to an article on PitchforkMedia.com where Mr. Wilson admits to being a fan of creamo, emo, Alexisonfire and Fall Out Boy. He goes on to say that the Fall Out Boy cover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is brilliant and he even suggested that the soundtrack to the movie "Control" (about JD frontman Ian Curtis) should feature all JD covers by FOB and Panic! at the Disco.WhatTheFuck? Now I know Tony has cancer and he taking meds and all that but, seriously, how whacked out on pharma do you have to be to suggest that a movie about Ian Curtis should be soundtracked by Panic! and FOB? Ya know the thing that bothers me the most about the suggestion? He probably right.A soundtrack like that would attract a whole crop of kids who would absolutely eat up both the film and the music of JD. It would cement JD's legacy and showcase their relevancy. It's a sad truth to behold, but beheld it must be.However, upon actually HEARING the FOB cover of "Love Will..." I must say that, if there is a cover of this song out there that will be able to be related to by the youth as well as capture the energy and spirit of the original... Well kids this aint it. First of all, no matter how much a vocalist Ian Curtis wasn't, tis guy is even less. The cover lacks the overall verisimilitude of the original and seems to completely miss the point of what made the original a classic. Jessi and I were talking about this not too long ago when I told her about My Chemical Romance and The Used covering Queens "Under Pressure". The cover was fairly straightforward (although I'd like to knock that creepy Jack Nicholson grin off the face of The Used singers face) and therefore didn't lose the spirit of the original. However, not all covers are so lucky to escape the machine. Like many modern film remakes there is a trend in the creative personnel to say, "Well I like the original, but I want to do it my way".Well guess what douches, your way sucks! There are very few instances of a cover or remake surpassing the original or even rising to it's level, yet these guys keep trying. The recent MySpace series of Smashing Pumpkins covers perfectly illustrates this point. To have the poppy electro-rock of "1979" re-imagined as a lame piano piece misses the point of the song entirely. The album is rife with these kinds of examples. And all this is completely beside the point that Fall Out Boy still sucks! Jesus, do they suck.Peace and love, Peace and loveMichaelP.S. I'm trying to put some more dreampop kinds of influences on the material I'm writing. Can anyone suggest any good dreampop bands?
