Aaron Copland

Any Copland fans out there in MOG land? When you come upon an artist with such a distinctive sound, you just have to uphold him or her in the pantheon of music. To me, Copland is as unique and singular as Thelonious Monk, Stevie Wonder, Radio Head, and Bjork.Any takers?vinson valeganew york cityConsilience ProductionsJust Jazz

  1. Anonymous says I used to play in an orchestra when I was younger (I was a violinist), and Copland's music always made me cringe. It was too bright, too hard, too black-and-white. Vivaldi was my favorite composer to play, by far, and one of the few I can stand to listen to.

  2. Robin Eubanks says I like Copland very much. Appalachian Spring is my favorite piece of his. I used to listen to it all the time. I would loop certain sections so I could study the different aspects that appealed to me. I was told that he did not like jazz too much. If that's true, that's his problem. It doesn't diminish what I can get out of checking his music out.

  3. Vinson Valega says Funny how things happen. I was playing Copland all day at home, then just now was walking around the Village and came upon this 1961 NY Indie film, "Something Wild," by Jack Garfein (never heard of it), where the music is by Copland! What a strange coincidence...:) Anybody in MOG-land know this film? I plan on going back to check it out if only for the music (it's only playing for a week)...no time this evening... Thanks! vinson valega new york city Consilience Productions

  5. Grievous Angel says you should check out the lincoln portrait. there was a great old columbia LP w/ the composer conduction and henry fonda as the narrator, but my favorite is the atlanta symphony on telarc, with Kate Hepburn, w/ her distinctive quavery delivery, strikes just the right balance between over-dramatizing and the maudlin. and the orchestral playing is just superb, demonstration quality sound too.
