I know it's been a while since I posted anything on my MOG but I'm trying to juggle a part time job AND 16 credit hours. So if anyone has a problem with that, well, that's just too damn bad.ANYWAY...I recently purchased "The Leader of the Pack" by The Shangri-las and I'm absolutely in love with it! I don't know if I'm going through some girl group phase but I find every song simply divine. I may infact be the only person on my campus that's cranking "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" in their car as they enter the school parking lot. There's an innocence in these songs that I find so sexy. If there is anything that's missing in popular music today it's innocence. Not that there's anything wrong with sexy. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy sexy as much as the next person. I just find innocence to be so refreshing. Listen to "Give Him a Great Big Kiss" if you want to understand where I'm coming from.

Great cover on that LP... I have to admit that I don't have all that much stuff by The Shangri-las... however one of my fave tunes is a tribute to one of the member, or someone that that the songwriter thought was a member, it's called Angela.

Keep a look out for a new solo album by Mary Weiss, the only still-living member of the Shangri-Las. There is a write-up about it in this month's Mojo magazine.

That Mary Weiss album ought to be cool. Norton is a cool label.
The first thing I thought when I heard the Donnas wasn't "Oh they sound like the Ramones," but what a huge debt they owe the Shangri La's. The Donna's are great, don't get me wrong, I love their records bigtime, and don't find them derivative in a bad way at all. (Even Aerosmith covered the SL's). But just the whole way of being a band of "Girls Together Outrageously" is such a cool thing, you have to give credit to the the SL's, they were the first. They were tough chicks from Queens, not really pin-up pretty, and the rocked. They showed that if you had something to say and some guts, anyone can do it. Music as democratic expression, not art.
I still love the part in LoTP when Mary totally goes for it when she yells "LOOK OUT! LOOK OUT! LOOK OUT! LOOK OUT!" right before the crash.
