Amazing show!!

Posted almost 6 years ago
In the last week I went to 2 shows...the first one was $20 (a bunch of new metal bands that I went to only because I promised a friend) at the House of Blues. The drinks were way overpriced...the music was absolutely horrible...and the crowd fucking ate it up! The bands were throwing up the devil horns constantly...sticking out their tongues and posturing like sex symbols every chance they got. The place was packed and there were lots of very attractive people there. I hated it. Am I a bitter, old man? Probably. I just didn't get it.Then...last Saturday I went to see the lengendary Dickies at a small club. Only $10 and there were about 50 people in the club. Plenty of room to walk right up to the stage. The band had alot of hits in the late 70s and the 80s...I saw them in 88 and they rocked...but could they keep it up for 2006? Absolutely. They were incredible! They played all their hits...the dance floor was empty enough for me to pogo and dance around like an idiot for their entire set. I couldn't help but think...is it better that these guys are under-appreciated and play small venues where I can basically have them to myself...or should they be playing large arenas and be rich rock stars like they deserve to be? I guess there's some truth in the old saying "One man's trash is another man's treasure."

  1. DahlyaRose says hmm. don't know the Dickies (perhaps I should remedy that). but yours made me think of a show I saw a month or so ago-The Tubes. I could not bloody believe it was really them-in a small venue and it was wonderful. They sounded great, loved the costume changes, loved being able to sing along and dance. They are putting together a bigger more dazzingly show next year for the east coast. They were so generous and fun that night. I seldom go to live shows because I can't sit at some arena and watch a mega-performance on a screen, and let's not even talk about ticket prices. Good time had by all that night.

Way back in '91, there was an attempt to organise something along the lines of SXSW here in Atlanta; for a week or so, at various clubs round town, you could pay $5 and see five bands who were trying to break through. I went to one of the gigs because s friend from New Orleans, Fred LeBlanc, and his new band, Cowboy Mouth, were gonna be playing. Everybody was supposed to get 45 minutes (and a couple of them didn't need that long to wear out their welcomes), and the Mouth were next-to-last. Most of the people there were there for only one of the acts, spent their time at the bar (which is outside the auditorium, the Roxy is a former movie house in Buckhead) till their friends went on, went in for that, and left. So they're setting the gear for Cowboy Mouth, and the lead singer and guitarist for the band that was gonna follow them were out front (tattoos, hair and all - a death matal band from Florida) and going like "Hey, look - they're settin' the drums up in front! Hey, this is gonna be lame, like Phil Collins!" Cowboy Mouth came on. They played for over an hour - nobody even *tried* to enforce the 45 minute limit - everyone who was left in the place was down front grooving... And the death metal guys were going "Jesus Christ! - We gotta go on after *that*?!?" Meanwhile, i just heard that Neil Innes has put together something resembling the Bonzo Dog Band and they're doing a UK tour. Maybe i'll get lucky and they'll do some sort of US tour, too, Maybe i'll get *really* lucky and Dave and Ray will put the Kinks back together for one last tour...
