Now that Milk is on its way to almost certain Oscar love, allow me to remind you about one of the few songs written (or in this case, re-written) in honor of the man. As the titles of the film at the end mentione, Dan White, who killed Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone in a fit of twinkie-induced rage (or so he'd have you believe) in 1978, the trial in the subsequent year reduced his sentence from murder to manslaughter, giving birth to one of the most mocked legal defenses of the century, riots by the gay community in San Fransisco. Those riots were called the White Night Riots, and true to Joe Strummer's song, it was a riot of their own.

But in terms of songs off the Clash's debut album that related to the case, the Dead Kennedys found that a rewriting of "I Fought the Law" was in order. Hence, the resulting rewrite occurred:

That fall, Jello Biafra ran for mayor of San Francisco, promising to erect statues of Dan White for pelting purposes across the city. He lost that election to Dianne Feinstein. I think she's in a better place right now than he is.

But either way, this so beats naming your band after Harvey Milk. How original!
