WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Alec Ounsworth serves my inbox some humble pie, announces new project, Flashy Python

Posted 3 months ago

It doesn't seem that long ago that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah were a major success story for online music. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah was one of the first albums that we now think of when we think of a "Pitchfork" album, appreciated by no one outside a miniscule sphere until it was picked out of a pile and given a glowing review in 2005. The band's hype died down almost as quickly as it started after a less spectacular follow-up. And thus, a boom-bust cycle of hyped up indie bands was born.

The tragedy was that Clap Your Hands, a band that's now a punchline for indie blog overhype, had music that went against that very spirit. The whole appeal of the band was their modest approach to trying to make it in the city. It's what made the music work so well, regardless of the marketing.

I've been thinking about this band a lot lately as the decade dials down, and sure enough, this email, for one reason or another, makes its way to me:

Hello out There,

My name is Alec Ounsworth. I have completed a project called FLASHY PYTHON: SKIN AND BONES. You can listen to the album (and buy it if you feel so inclined) here.

As you may or may not know, and I suppose the reason I'm writing you directly, another project that I have been working on for several years now is called CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH. This is not that and that is this nor is it the other (the other often tragically confused with him or her) . . .

FLASHY PYTHON was conjured up and brought forth absolutely independently. It was completed recently and released even more recently to no acclaim nor discredit as no "news sources" were informed of its completion.

The idea is to present the project purely (while we still can) and let the individual make up his or her own mind which, as it seems to me, is perhaps the primary benefit in the otherwise alienating age of modern technology and communication.

I also have another album coming out on October 20th on Anti Records called Mo Beauty. You can hear a track from it over at stereogum. That is not this either.

Thanks for reading this email.

Sincerely,
Alec Ounsworth

Listening to Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah for the first time right now.  I'm not a huge indie fan, but they aren't bad.

I'll be checking out all the other stuff you posted about here too.

This is the first night in a long time, where I've had the opportunity to sit and listen to some new music.
