January 23, 2009: Hello!

I've just returned from a week in Pennsylvania recording vocals for the new 'Syn' album, 'Big Sky'.

It was -12 degrees celsius, all around was white and the snow was coming down like magic. It couldn't have been a better back drop for creativity.

I had been introduced to Steve Nardelli (The Syn) at Francis Dunnery's charity weekend last October at the start of his tour. Backstage, on the first night, Francis said, "Dorie, this is Steve, check out his song, you're going to be singing it in the set" and there were more brilliant songs to boot. By the end of the tour, Steve had played with us a couple of times and there were excited talks about the forthcoming album which Francis was going to produce, consequently, I was delighted to be asked to hold 10 days free at the beginning of January for recording.

Francis and I had 4 days to get started before Steve arrived, so we set out at the top of each song, listening, singing, debating, drinking copious amounts of coffee and recording our parts. Steve's songs are quite brilliant. Vocally they are each their own journey with startling unpredictability, both melodically and lyrically, whilst the music intricately ventures in and out of his progressive rock routes. By the time Steve arrived, we had 5 finished, and before he'd had a chance to listen to what we had done, we set him to work writing some lyrics for a part we had come up with for one of the songs.

It was truly a pleasure to sing on and be involved in, we had a really productive week and I'm left back in Blighty desperate to hear the finished product as the songs have been going round and round in my head!
