Seu Jorge

First things first. Wes Anderson's last movie "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou" was completely disappointing for me. After being completely transfixed by his first 3 films - Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, & The Royal Tennenbaums -- I truly believed Mr. Anderson could do no wrong. I went into Life Aquatic expecting continued greatness and even while I was watching it, I knew it was falling flat. Pretty much the only thing I found enjoyable about the film was Seu Jorge -- the acoustic guitar player who seemed to be in the background of every scene singing a Portuguese version of David Bowie songs. There's actually a CD of those recordings availalbe and I'm pretty hooked on it. I seem to be putting it on every Sunday morning while drinking coffee and reading the newspaper. It always puts a smile on my face and makes even the cloudiest of mornings a little brighter. Makes my two month old son smile, too.

  1. SatisfiedMind614 says The soundtrack is better than the flick, i concur. But I also think after seeing the movie a coupole of more times that even a supbar Wes Anderson movie is still more original and has more heart that about 95% of what gets made!

  2. etcvisitor says i have to say that i felt this same disappointment while watching rushmore and royal tennenbaums after really having liked bottle rocket. i did like life aquatic way more than the the other two. i do have to agree with the fact tha seu jorge really adds to the movie. if i had to pick one thing i would keep from that movie, it would be him... however, someone did once tell me that a lot of the lyrics are way wrong.

  3. Truth says What didn't you like about Rushmore? This is the first time I've heard someone echo disappointment from that film.

  4. mullytron says Aw, Life Aquatic is OK, just take it for what it is. Or maybe I just like the part where the killer whale is swimming upside down outside the porthole. Agreed, Seu Jorge, is the best part of the movie.

  6. vacasmagras says I love this cd. It is indeed perfect for a Sunday morning. If you can find it, I recommend an album called Tranquilo by Marcelinho da Lua. Tranquilo is a great album, a mix of electronica and reggae and samba. The best part of the album is a song with Seu Jorge on the vocals called 'Cotidiano' ('Daily', which is itself a Chico Buarque song.)
