My Name Is (Original Version)

HA, I FOUND IT!!!Here, ladies and gents is the original version of "My Name Is" in all it's homophobic glory! As I was saying in a comment to my previous post, the original lyrics to this song included gems like "My English teacher wanted to have sex in junior high/The only problem was, my English teacher was a guy..." and Em portraying himself as an "Extraterrestrial, killin' pedestrians, rapin' lesbians while they're screamin' 'Lets just be friends!'"To correct my other comment though, it turns out that this wasn't on The Slim Shady EP (which explains the appearance from Dr. Dre, being that the Slim Shady EP was a demo from before the deal with Aftermath), but was on the original cut of The Slim Shady LP before the guy who was sampled for the track (who turned out to be a gay rights activist) demanded that the lyrics be changed before he would clear the sample.Enjoy!

Augusts1 says Are you talking about Elton John being the artist who was sampled? I like Em's flow & some of his songs but I just haven't been able to get behind his mysogonistic lyrics. I know alot of what he raps about is comedy based but he just seems to have too many issues w/women. The song where he raps about him getting rid of his wife Kim who he murdered & he's speaking to his daughter the entire time is just way too twisted & demented even for me. Sick, sick song(& I don't mean sick in the good sense). Tori Amos does a cover of the song on her cd "Strange Little Girls" which is all covers & it's a very disturbing song even when she does it(not sure why she did the song to begin with). There's no doubt he's a very talented rapper though.

Lizziegreeneyes says '97 Bonnie & Clyde is the song... I'm guessing she did the song because it's a form of expression... she's done loads of "questionable" covers & written some racy songs herself. I think she sees an originality in the guy & wants to get him out to a different audience. I never liked the song, either version - though hers puts such a twisted spin on it - it's almost more scary. I dig the guy personally - sure he can be a little ripe in his lyrics... but his flow - when I am in the mood & it's too damn hot... or really ticked off at someone at work... he suits me just fine. But trust me - I am not behind some of those lyrics either. I've always kinda looked at him the same way I do Howard (not the one who married Anna-Nic) Stern. They like to push the boundaries & push buttons... I may not always agree with what they say & do, but that's a part of who they are. TROY: you go from quoting the best part of Kev's post to EURETHRA & Eminem... I loves you man !!! ;P Every once in a blue moon you show off that soft center... so we know we can get through that hard candy shell...

TroyPowers says August, you mean "Just the Two of Us" or "'97 Bonnie and Clyde" as it was called on the Slim Shady EP. I love the song. I think it's very well done. I think he accurately details the frustration he was feeling. I've wanted to kill people I've loved. Better to write a song about it and feel a little better listening to it with your friends than to actually do it. Lizzie: Yeah, I don't know what's up with the soft side. I even ate tofu today. I swear, if I'm not in the middle of a threesome by this weekend, I'm turning in my man card and checking into the hospital.

One of the major problems I have is that he has no distance in his story-telling. The difference between a rapper like Eminem and someone like Ice-T is you known exactly when they are telling a story about a character and when they are talking about themselves, and you get the irony right away. If you have to explain the irony, or explain the art, in my mind, it's not art at all. And so for me, I think Eminem has flashes of brilliance, but he's an immature artist. Without a doubt his flow is stellar, and with Dr. Dre as a producer he went to amazing heights. Is he going to grow anywhere? I doubt it. Troy ::: tofu? Yeah, right.

TroyPowers says Actually, I think Em's problem is that he's tried to grow too much and he's lost some of that original edge and charm. As far as having to explain the irony, I think if you don't get it right away, then you just don't get his type of humor. I have the same problem with people who meet me for the first time and think my sense of humor is a little over the edge. Or, I guess I should say that they have the same problem with me.

Lizziegreeneyes says Doesn't make him any less of an artist... & I see distance between him & his songs... but part of that could be cuz I want to see the distance there... all I know is here & there I wanna listen to the Marshall Mathers LP & I always have the windows down & the volume up & I sing along to as much of it as I can... I can get tongue-tied with a lot of it... Art is as many different things as there are people in the world... we could all listen to the same song & all of us would come to different conclusions based on who we are & what we've done & been up to that point.

I agree, he does capture the frustration he felt in that relationship well. Who hasn't at least thought of killing someone they loved or that has driven them crazy? And better to write a song about it rather than doing it. But I don't have to like it. It's a creepy song & it's very disturbing to me, mainly because of the inclusion of his daughter. I don't even really care for Tori's version either, although she does it well. Thanks Michelle for your understanding & I agree w/the distance factor, very true. Maybe because the original song had a more whimsical tune to it, and you kinda knew it was a joke. I never liked the version they included on the Slim Shady LP. You've also gotta understand that when Eminem dropped songs like "Just the Two of Us" and "Brain Damage" nobody had heard anything like this in hip-hop. That, and the fact that hip-hop songs have talked about rampant murder and such forever...it just never struck me as disturbing. This Tori Amos version...THAT'S disturbing! See if the old beat gives it a bit more of that comical feel.
