YOU CAN'T NOT GET NO SATISFACTION

What were you doing when...

Posted over 2 years ago
...you last fell in love with an album?
It occurred to me recently that whether you can really sink your teeth into a particular piece of new music has a lot to do with what you're doing when you hear it for the first time.
Zum Beispiel (German for "for example"), I find it really hard to get into music while I'm sitting at my computer at work. Which is a shame because that's where I do most of my Mogging and downloading. But, I find that in my car I can really feel what I'm listening to. I couldn't count how many times I've "discovered" a song at the gym that I wouldn't have really felt somewhere else.
So, think back to your last musical discovery. What were you doing when it really "clicked" for you. I don't mean that album you rushed home to listen to because you had been waiting months for its release. I mean the one that came completely out of left field.
Mine (which I have previously Mogged about) was Esthero's Wikked Lil' Grrrls and I was cleaning my house on a sunny Sunday afternoon...all the windows and doors open, a warm summer breeze sweeping through the house carrying the scent of fresh cut grass and Arm & Hammer carpet freshener.
I had been a fan of Esthero's first album, but this one was such a departure from that, and it just hadn't clicked with me. Funny enough, I had seen her perform these songs in concert, and really enjoyed the show (enough to buy the CD afterwards), but...I just wasn't feeling the urge to put it on.
Well, the creator somehow knew that my pause for procrastination...the one that comes between finishing up the vacuuming in the living room, and the dreaded start of the kitchen (I absolutely HATE washing dishes) was the perfect time to hit me with "If Tha Mood". The rest, as they say, is
So, I dare you! I dare you to blast this...windows open, spring breeze tickling you, buzzed off Pine-Sol, standing there looking over the results of your spring cleaning with a mixture of pride and dread of the next step, and not love this song. The horns alone will make you wanna jump up and down on your freshly Febreezed couch like a spazz. Promise.

  4. donnazyx says Excellent post, and very well-written. This is actually the very first post I have read on mog.com, and I'm excited to see that there are intelligent, like-minded music lovers out there. I never knew about mog.com until now! If only the stupid mog-o-matic would work for me (grrr! it keeps saying the .dmg file is corrupt and can't install). Anyway, I love Esthero, but didn't love 'If Tha Mood' until I read your comment and listened with new ears. It's a steamy August Saturday morning and as I sip coffee, nurse my hangover, and surf the net, I'm suddenly In Tha Mood to tend to my own pile of dishes. :)

  5. TroyPowers says Donna...first, welcome to the mog universe. Glad you found something that drew you in, and honored that it was one of my offerings. I do what I can to keep the people happy. ;) It's cool to meet a fellow Esthero lover too. There aren't a whole bunch of us here, but...that's cool too. Stick around. There are some real kick-ass people, passionate writers, and just all-around good souls floating around this place. It's hard not to love it, once you find your niche.
